Patio and pool deck coatings for Houston homes

Patios, porches, and pool decks get sun, rain, and bare feet. We use UV-stable topcoats with an added slip texture so the surface stays safe when it is wet and does not chalk or yellow in the sun. Lighter blends stay cooler underfoot in July.

Every floor on this site is diamond-ground first, never acid-etched, and an outdoor slab is no exception. The same prep that holds up a garage floor is what keeps a patio from lifting after a wet season.

Cracks and pits on an outdoor slab get the same treatment as a garage floor: filled and ground flush before anything gets coated over them, not patched after the fact.

Houston runs through a long wet season, which means an outdoor coating spends real time under standing water and foot traffic together. The slip texture and the UV-stable topcoat are both there for that stretch of the year, not just for looks on a dry day.

The same holds for the covered patios already on this site: a roof over the space cuts down on direct rain, but it does not do anything about the humidity, so the coating still needs to hold up to the air itself, not just the weather that reaches it.

Flake adds a light texture on its own. For patios, pool decks, and laundry rooms we broadcast a grit into the topcoat so the surface stays safe when it is wet.

The grit is sized to the space, not a single fixed texture across every job. A front porch and a pool deck do not need the same amount of grip underfoot.

Bare feet are the reason this matters more outdoors than in a garage. A texture that is barely noticeable to a shoe is the difference between safe and slick to a wet bare foot.

Covered patios, porches, and walkways are the most common outdoor jobs, along with pool decks. A back porch coated in grey flake, right up against brick paving, is one of the jobs already on the site.

A covered, drive-through porch is on the site as well, which is closer to an outdoor hallway than a sit-down patio, and it gets the same slip-resistant system.

Flake with a broadcast grit is the most common outdoor choice: it hides leaf and dirt tracking between cleanings and adds the same slip texture. Solid color with grit reads cleaner if you want less pattern underfoot.

A lighter blend is worth asking about on any patio or porch that sits in direct sun most of the day. It stays cooler underfoot in July than a dark solid color will.

The same grind-first rule applies right up to the coping. We are not going to coat over a slab we have not opened up just because it happens to sit next to water.
